October 31, 2013

Available to new downloads of Pokki on October 31, and pushed to existing users through the Pokki auto-update system on October 31. Existing users can ensure they have the this version by right clicking on the Pokki acorn in the taskbar, and selecting "Check for updates". This release is limited to Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

Existing users can ensure they have the this version by right clicking on the Pokki acorn in the taskbar, and selecting "Check for updates". This release is limited to Windows 7, 8, and 8.1.

  • Pokki menu
    • New Pokki taskbar icon option: Home (default)
    • Localized in 12 languages: German, French, Italian, Spanish (Castilian), Spanish (Latin American), Simplified Chinese, Russian, Portuguese (Brazilian), Danish, Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish
    • Rename menu favorites: Right clicking on the favorite and select "Rename favorite"
    • Unification of Pokki apps and native Windows apps in menu favorites: all apps can be renamed and removed

What's Fixed

  • Pokki acorn not appearing in the taskbar
  • Pokki acorn in the taskbar appearing grey and not responding to mouse clicks
  • Appearance of pop-up dialog asking "Do you want the Pokki toolbar on your taskbar?"

  • Performance improvements to Pokki menu and taskbar
  • Improved unicode support for non-ASCII-based standard character encodings
  • Performance improvements when accessing the Pokki services
  • Improved support for an auto-hidden taskbar 

What's Fixed

  • Pokki menu may not appear when Pokki acorn clicked in the taskbar
  • Pokki menu was incorrectly positioned relative to the taskbar
  • Control panel items (specifically 64-bit) were not listed in the Control Panel section of the Pokki menu
  • Pokki apps not appearing in the taskbar when open or pinned to taskbar
  • Files and folders were not removable from the favorites panel in the Pokki menu
  • Apps were not removable from the recently used panel in the Pokki menu
  • Removing an item from the favorites panel in the Pokki menu wasn't reflected in All Apps/Programs and Control Panel sections

This release includes a number of additions to the Pokki menu:
  • Added option to hide popular app recommendations
  • Added option to delete a shortcut from All Programs/All Apps (right click on item)

  • File names will include or exclude the file extension depending on the Explorer setting

What's Fixed

  • Fixed taskbar flash when installing apps
  • Fixed visual "jump" of app icon in taskbar at start of app download
  • Pokki Menu may have incorrectly positioned after display resolution change or taskbar reposition
  • Removed automatic scrolling of All Programs/All Apps from Pokki Menu when expanding a folder

What's New

This release includes a number of additions to the Pokki menu:
  • Introduction of a light theme to the Pokki menu and notifications
    • This becomes the default theme for new installs.
    • Existing users remain on the dark theme, however are introduced to the new theme through an update message within the menu.
    • Users can switch between both themes from the settings panel.
  • Moved notifications panel to a drop-down menu
    • Accessible from the notifications button to the right of the search box.
  • Ability to customize the shortcuts listed in the sidebar of the menu (eg. Computer, Pictures, etc)
    • Users can pick which shortcuts are included in the sidebar through the settings panel.
  • Option to change the Pokki acorn in the taskbar to the Windows logo
    • Can be enabled/disabled from the settings panel.
  • Improved recently used apps/programs listing in sidebar
    • Can be enabled/disabled from the settings panel.
    • Maximum number of items listed is defined by how many special shortcuts are enabled (previously was a set limit).
  • Improved clarity of button which opens the Windows Start Screen with new icon

    • Settings are accessible from the menu interface (previously only by right clicking the acorn). This should help discoverability of it, especially on non-Windows 8.
    • Also added the option to jump to support and provide feedback.
  • Improved app/program search
    • Search is quicker.
    • Results are more accurate (ie. the item you’re really searching for is returned at the top of the results).
      Increased search scope to include shortcuts to executables.
  • All apps/programs panel now includes all shortcuts
    • Previously only executable shortcuts were included. Now includes everything from the traditional “All Programs” list.
  • Improved readability of all items in the menu
    • Sidebar is wider, so the recently used programs are not truncated as often.
    • The names under the favorite apps are given more space, and double lines.
    • Entire menu is taller, and not as wide.
    • Increased grid size for favorites.
    • Improved truncation of item’s names in favorites panel.
    • Layout change for popular apps.
  • Ability to add a file or folder from the desktop to the favorites panel
    • Right click on any file or folder in Explorer and select “Add to Pokki Menu” and the item will appear in the Pokki favorites section of the menu.

  • All apps/programs and control panel items sporadically disappear from the menu
  • Occasional inability to remove files and folders from favorites panel
  • Duplicate entries displayed in all apps/programs
  • Pokki acorn incorrectly renders when taskbar has multiple rows

  • Support for favorited items which are moved from their original location
  • Bottom part of button that opens the Windows Start Screen was not clickable after checking for updates

What's Fixed

  • Windows 8 features, such as Windows key opens the Pokki Menu, were failing to be restore on computer start-up
  • Unable to remove certain web links from favorites section in the Pokki Menu
  • Notification banners that contained text with a single quote were not displayed on screen or in the notification center

Known Issues

  • A handful of programs fail to be returned when searching from the Pokki Menu
  • Pokki fails to appear in the taskbar if UAC is disabled

What's New

  • Dramatically improved speed of "Boot to desktop" feature on Windows 8 (completely avoids the Start Screen)
  • Improved Pokki start-up speed (Pokki Menu loads first, and then apps)
  • Popular apps listed in the Pokki Menu refresh and rotate daily
  • Escape key closes the Pokki Menu
  • Improved support for non-English (eg. Arabic) versions of Windows (no localization or right-to-left support, however Pokki will function)

What's Fixed

  • Pokki crash when waking computer from sleep
  • Apps and the Pokki Menu not opening when clicking on their icons in the taskbar, and unable to relaunch or quit Pokki
  • Apps there were visible in the taskbar, through search, and listed in All Apps/Programs, were not visible in the Favorites panel of the Pokki Menu
  • Failure when trying to download and install Adobe Flash (mostly impacted people outside of North America and people using mobile network internet connections)
  • Unable to scroll the Windows 8 Apps folder in the Pokki Menu using the mouse wheel
  • App icons cut off/not displayed in taskbar when vertically oriented
  • Pokki acorn in taskbar not changing to correct icon when switching toggling the "Disable bottom left hot corner" feature
  • Settings panel in Pokki Menu closes instead of opens when selecting "Settings" from the Pokki acorn right click menu
  • Momentary flash of white in apps and Pokki Menu
  • When changing display resolutions with open apps, the app's window title bars may be positioned off screen (eg. disconnecting from a projector)
  • Windows 8 apps listed in the Pokki Menu didn't include their background color
  • Pokki Menu opens on wrong side of the screen when the Pokki acorn is positioned on a taskbar that isn't on the primary display

Known Issues

  • A handful of programs fail to be returned when searching from the Pokki Menu
